now, "new york times" finest, columnist ralph, and ross. ross, i'm going to start with you. you think both sides have decided it's in their political interest to go over the fiscal cliff. is that right? >> yeah, you never want to rule a deal off the table because we have lived through so many rounds that have ended in deals in the last couple years, but in this case, i think democrats think they get a better deal on policy by going over the cliff. that they end up getting more in taxes with less in spending cuts than they would get if they had to cut a deal right now. and republicans have persuaded themselves not completely convincingly in my view, but they have persuaded themselves it's much better to accept slightly higher taxes that they themselves don't have to vote for directly, even though they'll still be casting a vote for new tax rates, they'll be able to say, well, taxes have already gone up and we're just voting to cut them. so that's sort of how, at least, i think both sides are persuading themselves to sort of tip-toe off the cliff. >> and charles, i know you think republ

questioned with the shooting. we don't know his relationship is to all of this. amanda ross is with wvit, nbc affiliate in that area. she is standing by with the very latest. what can you tell us? >> pretty much what you heard there. we do have reports of now confirmed several students and staff were killed inside that school. the shooter also found dead inside that school. as you heard from connecticut state police lieutenant paul vance, they're now going through the process of dealing with searching that school, issuing a search warrant and going to collect evidence there. what we are told right now is that the governor of connecticut, governor dannel malloy is meeting with families and not releasing the information that we need right now is because the governor wants to make sure that the families get that information first. and of course, as we've heard, we have sources that say that we have dozens killed. so they're probably dozens of families that the governor is meeting with right now. >> amanda, what can you tell us if anything about the relationship between the shooter and that schoo

's chief investigative reporter brian ross tracking reports as they come in. he has the latest. >> reporter: tonight police identified the shooter as 20-year-old adam lanza in a picture here taken 7 years ago and provided to abc news by a family friend. a relative told abc news that dam was obviously not well. something we also heard from family friends in newtown who described the young man as troubled, described his mother nancy as very rigid. this all took place in this tiny connecticut town, a shooting spree that ended at the elementary school but first began at the lanza family home, which was nearby. police late today said his mother's body was found in the family home. state and federal authorities believe his mother may have once worked at the elementary school where adam went on his deadly rampage, although he was not a teacher, perhaps a volunteer. authorities also searched the new jersey apartment of adam's older brother ryan in hoboken. police initially identified ryan as the killer unless nl she sent out tweets saying it wasn't me, i was at work all day. police are questioning

from wall street today, my good friend, cnbc's ross westgate. happy holidays, sir. >> hey, brian. happy holidays. good to see you before christmas, brian. yeah, we closed high yesterday, but with the events that you've talked about, republicans in the end not holding that vote because john boehner couldn't muster enough votes to raise taxes on people earning over $1 million. futures took a bit of a dive. and right now, we're calling markets down here, the s&p down twre 20 points. there's concern now that boehner can't secure enough votes in the republicans to support whatever plan may come from the other side of the aisle. and there's been a lot of complacency going in for investors. they will eventually get a deal done. european markets are now down at the session lows. off about a percent for the ftse. similar for the german market and in paris as well. so eyes for these periods now around christmas squarely on washington as you might see. not much christmas cheer for research in motion either. this was a stock that was up towards after they came out with numbers better than expected.

, not stellar holiday shopping season and let's bring in carol ross, former investment banker, knows a thing or two about shopping and investment petailers, i'm saying, i'm tired of the excuses. i'm tired of hearing, oh, it's sandy or it's that or that and there's always an excuse when the economy starts to weaken, i just any the economy is weakening. what do you say? >> well, i agree, i mean, obviously, people have less money, they haven't been working and they're underemployed, but i do think that this is the big piece, stuart, this is pessimism. because you have to remember, even in the face of no money and no job, which has been going on for a while. consumer credit capacity actually has been increasing and consumers have been deleveraging and their home values have been going and theoretically they have more credit capacity, the fact that they're not using that capacity says to me, they're not optimistic about the future. >> i can see that this fiscal cliff thing is a problem. because nobody knows what's going to happen. you have no certainty for next year, so, i can see the fiscal clif
